Renowned Kashmir Dermatologist Dr Qazi Masood Is No More

The medical fraternity of Jammu and Kashmir is mourning the loss of one of its stalwarts, Dr Qazi Masood, former Dean and Principal of Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar. Dr Masood passed away on Thursday after a prolonged illness, leaving behind a legacy of unparalleled contributions to the field of dermatology and medical education in the region.

Dr Masood served as Principal and Dean of GMC Srinagar from August 2011 to September 2012. Before his tenure in administrative leadership, he was the Head of the Department (HOD) of Dermatology at the same institution. His expertise and dedication significantly upgraded the Department of Dermatology at SMHS Hospital, introducing newer technologies and procedures that elevated it to national prominence.

Dr Masood was born in September 1960. He is survived by two sons, both are doctors. Dr Masood had undergone a kidney transplant earlier.

Known for his exceptional medical expertise and compassionate demeanour, Dr Masood dedicated his life to serving the people of Kashmir. His contributions to dermatology in the region are immeasurable, and his legacy will continue to inspire generations of medical professionals.

Dr Masood was married to Prof. Shahida Mir, a distinguished figure in her own right, having served as Principal/Dean and HOD of Gynaecology and Obstetrics at GMC Srinagar. Together, they formed a powerhouse couple in the medical community, profoundly impacting the healthcare landscape of the region.

The Department of Dermatology, Venereology, and Leprosy at GMC Srinagar, it may be recalled here, was established as a separate entity in 1972, originally headed by Prof GH Hajini. Dr Masood took over the reins in 1997, leading the department for approximately 12 years before ascending to the position of Principal/Dean. His leadership and vision were instrumental in securing approval for postgraduate and diploma courses in Dermatology, Venereology, and Leprology by the Medical Council of India in 1987, with formal recognition granted in 2010.
