Alarming Levels of Unemployment

Jammu and Kashmir’s youth unemployment rate has reached alarming levels, standing at 17.4%, significantly higher than the national average of 10.2%. This stark reality highlights the need for immediate attention and strategic planning to address the issue.

The J&K’s economy has transitioned from an agrarian base to a service-dominated structure, with agriculture’s contribution declining over the years. Industrial growth remains stagnant, while the service sector contributes a significant portion to the economy. To address this issue, the government has launched initiatives like Mission YUVA, aiming to create enterprises and generate jobs over the next few years.

Promoting entrepreneurship and self-employment opportunities can help alleviate unemployment. Targeted skill development programs can enhance employability and bridge the gap between education and industry requirements. Revitalizing industrial growth and promoting investment in sectors like tourism, horticulture, and IT can create new job opportunities.

The government needs to adopt a multi-faceted approach to mitigate the youth unemployment crisis in Jammu and Kashmir and unlock the region’s potential for economic growth and development. By working together, it’s possible to address the specific needs of the region and create a more prosperous future for its youth.
