Srinagar :The business community of Kashmir on Wednesday launched its week-long protest programme with a silent protest march to “protect” Article 35-A from any onslaughts.

Several business bodies took part in the silent protest march from Residency Road to Press Enclave here.

President of Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Javid Ahmad Tenga said the people of Jammu and Kashmir are ready to sacrifice everything and will shed their last drop of blood to defend the Article 35-A.

Mubeen Ahmed Shah, a senior member of KCCI said that the traders’ bodies assembled to protest the interference with Article 35-A. He said the Supreme Court should dismiss the case.

The protest was jointly organized by KCC&I, FCIK, KTMF, JKSECE, Batamaloo Traders Association, KCSDS, All Joint Traders and Transporters Coordination Committee Batamaloo and other local market associations, a statement issued here by KCCI said.

The business leaders expressed their concern over the threat to abrogate Article 35-A through mischievous scheming, the KCCI statement added.

Earlier, The Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) of Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Yasin Malik met to ‘deliberate the serious challenge posed to Article 35A.

“We want to make it clear to Government of India that any and every attempt made at changing the demographic nature of the state will be stiffly resisted,” the JRL said.

Implying that they were in touch with all segments including the legal fraternity, traders, civil society and academia, the JRL said that there is complete unanimity and cohesion among all with regard to ‘resisting and fighting this serious assault together’.

“On 5 and 6 August, a complete protest strike will be observed throughout, people will register their total disapproval & resistance to this politically motivated move. A mass agitation of hitting and occupying streets will be launched if any tinkering with 35A is allowed to take place under a legal garb, the consequences of which will be entirely on those perpetuating such mischievous ploys against people of J&K.”

The JRL also said that people should to be ready as ‘there is every apprehension of a mass crackdown against the leadership and political activists.
