Restrictions in Srinagar to prevent Muharram procession

Srinagar :Authorities on Wednesday imposed restrictions in various parts of Srinagar city to prevent Muharram processions which remain banned in the areas since 1989.

Restrictions were imposed in areas falling under the jurisdiction of Shaheed Gunj, Batamaloo, Shergari, Kothibagh, Ram Munshi Bagh, Maisuma, and Kral Khud police stations, said an official.

He said the restrictions were imposed as a precautionary measure to maintain law and order.

An eye witness said that policemen have erected barricades in these areas.

Srinagar District Magistrate also ordered all schools and colleges in the city to remain closed for the day.

Authorities have not allowed any 8th and 10th Muharram processions in Srinagar since 1989.
