20 dead, 17 injured in Ramban road accident

Srinagar: Twenty people were killed and 17 injured when the driver of an overcrowded mini bus lost control of the vehicle and it plunged into a 500-feet deep gorge on the Jammu-Srinagar highway on Saturday, police said.

Reports said that around 11:00 in the morning, a minibus (Matador) on way from Ramban to Banihal loss the control and when a minibus ferrying them plunged into a deep gorge along the banks of river Chenab in Ramban district of Jammu. The vehicle bearing registration number JK19-1593 overturned and rolled down about 500ft deep gorge near Kayla mode in Ramban.

The official said that the deceased include four females. “19 dead have been identified, including the driver. The identity of one body was not known,” he said, adding that among the injured, six were being treated at district hospital Ramban while eleven others were airlifted to Jammu for specialized treatment.

Local volunteers, army and the police carried out the rescue operation. It took time for the rescuers to reach the ill-fated vehicle due to the steep slope, said an official to PTI news agency.
