Shutdown, Restrictions Affect Normal Life In Kashmir

Srinagar : Normal life remained paralysed in Kashmir valley on Thursday due to a shutdown called by the separatists and restrictions imposed by the authorities to prevent protests against the killing of two militants and a civilian in Fateh Kadal yesterday.

Restrictions under Section 144 CrPc have been imposed in five police station areas of the city here, a Police official said.

He said the curbs have been imposed in the Police station areas of Nowhatta, Khanyar, Rainawari, Safakadal and M R Gunj.

The official said the restrictions were imposed as a precautionary measure to maintain law and order.

Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) comprising of two factions of Hurriyat and JKLF Wednesday called for a strike across Kashmir valley on Thursday.

The strike call came after two militants and a civilian were killed during an encounter with in Fateh Kadal area of the old City here on Wednesday morning.

Meanwhile, a complete shutdown is being observed in the Kashmir valley.

Reports said that most of the shops, fuel stations and other business establishments were shut in the City due to the strike.

They said public transport was off the roads while private cars, cabs and auto-rickshaws were seen plying in some areas.

Similar reports of shutdown were received from other district headquarters of the valley.

Mobile Internet continued to remain suspended in Srinagar, while network speeds have been reduced in some other districts of the valley
