Kashmir shuts on Burhan Wani’s death anniversary

Srinagar  : A complete shutdown is being observed across Kashmir on Monday on the third death anniversary of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani.

The shutdown call was given by the joint separatist leadership comprising Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, and incarcerated Muhammad Yasin Malik.

Senior separatist leaders, Syed Ali Geelani and Mirwaiz Umer Farooq were placed under house arrest. Muhammad Yasin Malik s currently in Tihar Jail.

All the shops and other business establishments and private offices remained closed all over the valley, while traffic is off the roads however private vehicles was seen plying in uptown Srinagar.

Authorities have put severe restrictions in sensitive areas of summer capital Srinagar, south Kashmir and other parts of the valley.

Reports said that authorities clamped curfew and sealed all the entry and exit points leading towards home town of Wani.

The graveyard of Wani and road towards his residence at Shariefabad has been sealed by forces, said the reports.

On July 8, 2016, Burhan Wani and his two associates were killed in a brief encounter with counter insurgent forces in Bamdoora Kokernag area of south Kashmir.

Soon after his death, Kashmir erupted with protests and strikes for six months. During six months of protests around 100 civilians were killed while at least 10,000 got injured.

Meanwhile, authorities have suspended mobile Internet service in  South Kashmir districts and the speed has been reduced to 2g in Srinagar.
