Dal Lake in Srinagar city is not only tourist attraction but also soul of this ancient city for tourists. Dal Lake is facing lot of problems including pollution and the levels of the pollution are only increasing with each passing day.
There are multiple reasons for the pollution within the lake. One of the reasons according to the scientists and researchers is the fecal matter going directly from houseboats into the lake. Dal Lake is facing huge problems and houseboats are not the only reasons for the levels of pollution it is facing at present.
Since the abrogation of 370 on August 5, last year, there have been constructions going on within the water body especially from the area of Nowpora and from Khanyar up to Ashia Bagh Bridge near Hazratbal.
Hundreds of houses and business outlets have been constructed in all these months of clampdown with authorities helping the illegal constructions to go on within the Dal Lake.
All said and done Dal Lake is facing lot of problems and if the authorities will not wake up it can be the lethal call for its survival. Recently Lakes and Waterways Development Authority (LAWDA) has started the process of installing bio-digesters in households of the catchment area and some houseboats.
The DRDO designed Bio-digesters are being installed on pilot basis and their efficiency shall be under trial.
A team of scientists from DRDO are on a 3-day visit to ascertain the functioning of four bio-digesters which have been installed in the houseboats. The team from DRDO along with vice chairman, J&K LDA and engineers of LDA took an extensive visit of the areas including Dole Demb, Teilbal and interiors of Lake. The process of installation of Bio-digesters is being directly monitored by the Committee of Experts (CoE) constituted by High Court J&K.
