Perceptions in JK

Post abrogation of article 370, both in Jammu and Kashmir regions, people have lot of apprehensions about the central laws to be implemented and feel that there would be not protection to their local rights after JK has reduced to a Union Territory.

Lockdown and curbs on internet for the past seven months also added to these perceptions floating on the ground that there would now no protection to the land, jobs and other touchy issues in Jammu and Kashmir. With entire mainstream political leadership behind the bars, though the government has started the process of releasing them in a phased manner, the apprehensions are embedded.

The release of Dr. Farooq Abdullah has given fresh hope to the mainstream political parties like National Conference that they would be allowed to have the space utilized for the political activities. But most of the leadership of National Conference including former chief minister Omar Abdullah is still under detention while the PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti is also behind the bars.

The new political faces like Shah Feasal and Sajad Gani Lone are also under detention while as a former lawmaker from Langate Engineer Rashid is detained in Tihar jail. Similarly entire leadership of separatists is detained and most of them have been shifted to outside jails.

Even the Kashmir Bar Association President Mian Abdul Qayoom is not being back though his lawyers have pleaded now in J&K High Court that due to the coronavirus threat, he should be shifted. Similarly hundreds of youth detained on August 5, last year are still not being released and many of them got the court orders for release from the courts but the authorities have not set them free.
