India Records Highest Ever Single-Day Spike In Coronavirus Cases As Lockdown 4.0 Begins

India recorded 5,242 Coronavirus positive cases in last 24 hours, the highest ever spike in a single day, Ministry of Health said on Monday. As many as 157 deaths related to the Covid-19 were also reported in last hours.

With this steep jump, the total number of positive cases in India is now 96,169, including 56,316 active cases, 36,824 cured/discharged/migrated cases. The countrywide death toll has now reached 3,029.

Maharashtra remains the worst-affected state due to the virus with 33,053 cases, including 1,198 deaths. It is followed by Gujarat (11,379), Tamil Nadu (11,224) and Delhi (10,054).

Over the past several days, India has wtinessed a steep spike in the number of positive Covid-19 cases and fatalities on a daily basis.

The Centre on Sunday announced to extend the ongoing lockdown till May 31 to check the spread of Coronavirus. The fourth phase of the lockdown comes with certain relaxations and fresh guidelines.

Meanwhile, the overall number of global coronavirus cases has increased to over 4.7 million, while the death toll has surpassed 315,000, according to the Johns Hopkins University.

As of Monday morning, the total number of cases stood at 4,713,620, while the death toll increased to 315,185, the University’s Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) revealed in its latest update.
