LIFTING CURBS

The Union Government has finally decided to lift the curbs on the high speed internet in Jammu and Kashmir but in a phased manner. Government informed the Supreme Court that they will allow people to have access to the 4G services but in the first phase only two districts in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir would get this benefit.

The Centre informed the Supreme Court that the special committee constituted to examine restoration of 4G services in Jammu and Kashmir has agreed to provide the high speed Internet access on a trial basis in limited areas.

Attorney General appearing for the Centre before a bench headed by Justice N.V. Ramana said that restrictions on Internet will be lifted on trial basis at certain geographical locations.

The Centre informed the court that the relaxation from August 16, in one district each of Jammu and Kashmir division will be assessed after two months. The government also said that blanket restoration of 4G in the UT would not be possible due to threats to security.

This means that the central government has decided to monitor the activities of people on the internet in these two districts for two months. They informed the court that after two months the committee will decide how to move ahead to lift the curbs on high speed internet in a phased manner.
