The Commanding Officer of an Assam Rifles battalion, his wife and son and personnel of the paramilitary force were killed in an ambush in Manipur on Saturday, Chief Minister N Biren Singh said.

The incident occurred in Churachandpur district close to the Myanmar border.

“Strongly condemn the cowardly attack on a convoy of 46 AR which has reportedly killed few personnel including the CO & his family at CCpur today. The State forces & Paramilitary are already on their job to track down the militants. The perpetrators will be brought to justice,” CM Singh wrote on Twitter.

The Commanding Officer of 46 Assam Rifles, Colonel Viplav Tripathy, had gone to a forward camp on Saturday and was returning when his convoy was ambushed, NDTV sources said.

No militant organisation has claimed responsibility for the attack so far although according to NDTV, Manipur-based terrorist group People’s Liberation Army, or PLA, is believed to be behind the attack.

Intermittent firing is going on, police sources told NDTV.
