Snowfall and further prediction, close Srinagar-Leh highway

With the heavy snowfall, and the prediction of more snow in Sonmarg and Zojila pass authorities have closed Srinagar-Leh strategic highway till further orders.

Earlier Beacon had pressed men and machinery at different places near Zojila pass and managed to keep the highway open in this month of January.

Due to the fear of avalanches and landslides, authorities decided to close the highway till the Beacon will clear the accumulated snow and will clear the disruptions from the highway after the prediction of snowfall is over.

According to news agencies from Ganderbal on Thursday they have said that, “Due to continuous spell of snowfall and extreme whether at Zoji-la axis resulting in heavy accumulation of snow on the axis, the Srinagar-Leh highway passing through the pass has become unworthy of vehicular movement,” reads an order issued by deputy secretary with divisional commissioner Ladakh. “Therefore, in the interest of the general public the Srinagar- Leh highway will close for all kinds of civilian vehicular movement till further order with regard to re-opening of Zoji-la (Pass).”

“The general public & tourists are advised to suspend any travel on Srinagar Leh highway through Zoji-la (Pass) axis with immediate effect.”
