Walnut woodcraft has been the source of survival for hundreds of families in Kashmir Valley especially in Srinagar city. Many artisans in Srinagar city are known in global markets especially in Europe for their skills and craft.

          According to the recent media reports Kashmir’s walnut wood craft is facing significant challenges that threaten its very existence. The struggles of Srinagar’s famous artisans are multifaceted, including a decline in demand due to mass-produced alternatives, a lack of interest from the younger generation, and economic considerations that make handmade crafts less viable. These challenges are to be addressed by the wings of the government which are responsible to keep this craft alive inspite of challenges.

          There is no doubt that mass-produced goods are overshadowing handmade creations, and younger generations prefer instant gratification through online platforms, diminishing appreciation for the patience and skill required in hand-carved wooden creations, are the problems for the survival of this craft. Artisans who are associated with walnut wood craft are having economic challenges also because it takes lot of time and energy to finish any walnut woodcraft item.
